Travel Companion Services
When someone can't travel alone, we're there — across Canada and around the world.
What is a Professional Travel Companion
A travel companion is an experienced caregiver who travels with someone who can fly commercially but shouldn't travel alone — an older parent visiting family, a traveller with early dementia or limited mobility, someone recovering from illness or surgery. Portage plans and manages the entire journey behind the scenes, while your companion provides face-to-face care and support from door to door.
When travel stops being simple
Most people don't think twice about booking a flight. But when mobility challenges, early dementia, anxiety, vision loss, or simply less confidence in busy airports enter the picture, a simple trip becomes a hard question — whether you're the traveller wondering if you can still manage it alone, a family member who can't be in two places at once, or a professional trying to arrange a safe journey for someone in your care.
Too often, the answer is that the trip just doesn't happen. It doesn't have to be that way.

How the journey works
Behind every trip are two roles: a Portage Case Coordinator, who plans the journey and manages the logistics, and your Travel Companion — the front line caregiver, focused entirely on the traveller.
Before the day of travel Your Case Coordinator books the flights and manages the logistics — pre-travel assessment, route planning, airline assistance and wheelchair bookings, mobility equipment, timing, and arrival arrangements — all set before anyone leaves home.
Door to gate Your Travel Companion meets the traveller at home, in hospital, or at a care facility, and guides them through check-in, security, customs, boarding, and luggage.
Throughout the journey Your Travel Companion provides reminders for medications, meals, and hydration, helps with transfers between flights, offers reassurance and hands-on support, and updates family at agreed points. If plans change mid-journey, your Travel Companion adapts on the spot while your Case Coordinator handles rebookings and logistics behind the scenes.
On arrival Your Travel Companion stays with the traveller until the journey is complete — settled with family, at home, at a hospital or care facility, or checked in at their hotel.
Professional caregivers
Every Portage Travel Companion is an experienced caregiver, trained in the complexities of care during travel — airport logistics, mobility and transfers, medication routines, fatigue, and the moments when a traveller becomes anxious or disoriented far from home. Each is matched to the demands of that particular journey, and selected for judgement: comfort managing delays, missed connections, and plans that change mid-trip.
This is not an online match or a favour from a stranger. Your Travel Companion has one job — the traveller — because a Portage Case Coordinator has planned the trip in detail and stays behind it from start to finish.
If our assessment shows a traveller needs clinical care in transit rather than companionship, that's a Medical Escort trip — and we'll tell you before anything is booked.
Flight or ground transportation
Most journeys are on commercial flights — but not all. For shorter trips, ground transportation can be the gentler option: a few hours by road is often easier on a traveller than boarding and deplaning an aircraft, with vehicle transfers at both ends.
Sometimes it's simply what the client prefers. And when the journey does fly, we arrange ground transportation on either side of the flight as required — the same care, door to door, whatever the mode.
Planning & Privacy
Built around planning
A successful journey starts long before the day of travel. Your Case Coordinator works through the details in advance, identifies potential challenges, and plans for them — so the trip proceeds smoothly.
Privacy matters
Our Travel Companions maintain a professional, low-profile appearance whenever possible. No highly visible medical branding, no oversized equipment — travel with dignity, not attention.
