“Portage”
To carry people or equipment over land when a journey cannot continue by water.
Why “Portage”?
A portage is a Canadian tradition—carrying a canoe and its supplies between waterways when there is no direct route forward.
It represents planning, resilience, and helping people reach places that would otherwise be difficult to access.
That idea reflects our work. When travel becomes too complex or too risky to manage alone, we help people continue their journey safely and with confidence.
A Canadian company built on experience
Portage is a Canadian company founded by professionals with decades of experience coordinating complex medical travel, medical aviation, and patient transportation.
Over the years, we have worked alongside hospitals, insurers, healthcare providers, governments, and families to help people travel safely when health, mobility, or cognitive challenges make travel more complicated.
Today, our focus is simple: providing experienced travel companions, caregivers, and medical professionals for people who need a little extra help getting from one place to another.
Our approach
Every journey is different, but the principles behind our work remain the same.
Privacy and discretion
Many of our clients value their privacy.
Rather than drawing attention with highly visible medical uniforms or oversized medical equipment bags, our teams maintain a professional, discreet appearance whenever possible. We believe people should be able to travel with dignity—not feel like the centre of attention in an airport.
Communication
Travel can be stressful, particularly when family members are separated by thousands of kilometres.
We believe communication is an important part of every journey. Before travel begins, we'll discuss how and when you'd like to receive updates. Throughout the trip, we'll keep you informed at appropriate points and let you know if anything significant changes.
Risk management
Successful journeys don't happen by chance.
We identify potential risks before travel begins, develop practical plans to manage them, and remain prepared to respond if circumstances change. Our goal is to prevent problems wherever possible—not simply react to them.
Clinical oversight
Many journeys require only practical travel support. Others involve more complex medical considerations.
When appropriate, Portage operates with physician oversight to provide clinical guidance, support travel planning, and assist with more medically complex situations. This ensures that healthcare considerations are integrated into the travel plan whenever needed.
Professionalism you can trust
Whether we are supporting a senior travelling to be closer to family, accompanying someone returning home after hospitalization, or assisting a traveller with cognitive or mobility challenges, our approach remains the same.
We treat every client with professionalism, respect, and dignity.
Our role is not to become the centre of attention. It is to quietly manage the details, reduce uncertainty, and help make what might otherwise seem like an impossible journey feel straightforward.
That is the standard we bring to every journey.
