Why Portage Exists
Portage is a Canadian company providing Travel Companion and Medical Escort services for people who need extra support to travel safely — whether because of health, mobility, or cognitive challenges. We plan and accompany journeys across Canada and around the world, working alongside families, hospitals, healthcare providers, insurers, and government agencies.

Some journeys matter too much to miss. Portage exists so they don't have to be.
Meet the Founder
Flight Paramedic · 20+ Years of Complex Repatriations, in Canada and Worldwide · Senior Emergency Services Leadership
Magni Magnason spent more than twenty years as a flight paramedic bringing people home — from hospital beds on other continents, from trips interrupted by illness or injury — planning journeys with hospitals, families, insurers, airlines, and physicians where nothing could be left to chance. Just as often, the need wasn't medical at all: families who simply wanted a trusted companion beside an older parent travelling to a wedding, a reunion, a place that mattered.
He founded Portage to make that kind of care a service in its own right — journeys planned with clinical rigour, delivered with warmth, and built on relationships rather than transactions. His years leading EMS operations and one of Canada's busiest 9-1-1 centres shape how every Portage journey is prepared: calmly, thoroughly, and ready for the unexpected.
Our Approach
-
Relationships First
We take the time to know the person we're travelling with — their comfort, their story, and what the journey means to their family.
-
Privacy and Discretion
Our teams maintain a professional, discreet appearance whenever possible — no highly visible medical uniforms or oversized equipment bags — so our clients travel with dignity, not attention.
-
Communication
We keep families, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders informed at key points throughout the trip, providing reassurance and peace of mind from departure to arrival.
-
Risk Management
We anticipate risks before travel begins, plan how to manage them, and stay ready to respond if circumstances change — preventing problems, not just reacting to them.
-
Clinical Oversight
Some journeys need practical travel support; others involve more complex medical considerations. When required, Portage operates with physician oversight to guide clinical decisions and travel planning.
portage (n) - carrying a canoe and its supplies overland between waterways, when there is no direct route forward.
Why “Portage”
The portage is a Canadian tradition: when the water ends, someone carries the load so the journey can continue.
That is our work. When travel becomes too complex or too risky to manage alone, we carry what needs carrying — so you can keep going.
No two journeys are exactly alike.
Some travellers simply need an experienced companion. Others require clinical care from a registered nurse or advanced care paramedic. We assess every situation individually and recommend the level of support that best fits the traveller's needs.
If you're not sure which service is appropriate, we're happy to talk through the situation and help you determine the best approach.
